Hello,
Where would I get started? What book would you recommend to a total and complete newbie that knows absolutely nothing whatsoever about electronics or electronic components but would like to one day be able to understand integrated circuits and whatever other electrical engineering things that I currently know so little about that the term above is the only one I know…and really I dont even know what an integrated circuit is….
What is the ultimate beginners book for this field for the total ignorant.
I cannot find a book titled "Electrical engineering for dummies"…
Please advise,
Thank you in advance for your time,
Perry in FL
I have found "Electronics For Dummies"..
Is this book still relevant for any of today’s technology? Or is this book an obsolete with only descriptions of equipment that is no longer used at all?
I have a college degree which i excelled in mathematics including college math, but before that statistics, college algebra, trig, etc..

Electronics question..?

Ok so a friend and I are having a disagreement.. He says a "switcher" opens and closes circuits, while I think its a transistor.

heres a copy of the question. A(n)____, Which is contained on an integrated circuit, can act as an electronic switch that opens or closes the circuit for electrical charges..

Also might be a capacitor..

Why do foreigners think Americans are dumb?

OK, so some people just said that foreigners think Americans are dumb.

Let’s see — maybe 90% of the technological advances in the last 125 years, most new medications, the lion’s share of Nobel prizes. The telegraph, the telephone, the phonograph, the electric light, the airplane, the digital computer, electronic television, color television, the transistor, the integrated circuit, the microprocessor, the Internet, yada yada yada . . . not to mention that we’re the richest and most powerful country in the world, landed men on the moon, have the highest percentage of college graduates of any nation, and almost all of the world’s top research universities.

OK, so am I missing something here?

What materials are used for such a project? I understand the idea that regardless of quality manufacture, an OEM CPU heat-sink (in this case on an Intel BOXD945GCLF2 Atom 330 Intel 945GC Mini ITX Motherboard/CPU Combo) will not be a perfect flat surface. So the need to lap its surface is obvious to me.

However, would there be a reason to not lap the surface of a CPU? I have no idea. I have never lapped computer components and I do know that doing something that may seem innocent could destroy an electronic component (such as a static electricity discharge that cannot even be felt can damage an integrated circuit).

I feel that I will have to stick with the OEM CPU heat-sink as I have not found an aftermarket heat-sink for the Atom 330 processor. Given that the processor runs on such low power, it probably does not need much more than the OEM heat-sink.

On the other hand, the Northbridge is equipped with a heat-sink and fan from the factory. At the very least, I plan to lap that heat-sink and replace the fan with one of high quality and possibly a lower sound level.

So, am I making any big mistakes?

And, of course, what is a proper method for lapping surfaces in this application?
Coldsomewildpaddle: Thank you for clarifying the situation. What you say does make sense, especially as I do intend to run this bugger at stock speed and load. I just enjoy being a perfectionist.

However, what will others say? We shall see.

Find the monthly growth rate. College Algebra?

An intel microprocessor contained 30,000 electronic components on January 1, 1976. The density of the elctronic components of the integrated circuit grew to 60,000 on July 1, 1977. Assuming exponential growth, find the monthly growth rate.

That's the question! Someone please help!
