Guys, could u please tell me names of books which can be useful for my first year? (And if possible, links to the ebooks? )

i am really good with electronics circuits …and components …also i am good understand in computer hardware .have.manage to build and customize my own pc;s …however i do not know much in software side such as programming languages only one i know is HTML which is kide of basic ..i am currently looking at VB & .NET ..is this a good point to start … what about XML , JAVA ….where can get some Information about VB and .NET how do i practice them …?

actually i had asked abt functions of a diode in my last question
and i got the answer that diodes usually used to get a single direction current in electronics circuits…now a question is raised in my mind that why we use a single direction current in electronics circuits,,,i mean where ,,,which part of a electronic circuit single direction current is used and why
