Lawyer or engineer?
Hello all, i need some advice on choosing a career path. As you can imagine, this is really nerve racking in a way. I like science, and if i become an engineer, i’d be an electronic or chemical engineer, on the other hand, law is also something i can imagine myself doing. I like to bicker or rather have rhetoric exchanges of malarkey, sometimes for hours on end, with my friends, and love proving people wrong. Having said that, I also like technology, and electronics. But i can also imagine drudging my ass off in some company doing whatever it is engineers do. lets face it, you dont need a passion to do engineering, how much passion can chips, and circuit panels arouse? and law on the other hand has its down sides as well, people tell me, that its pretty monotonous, and you have to read a lot. So i need a second opinion before taking up either one.

If you get a MS/PhD, then you stand a much better chance of doing something you like in engineering, which will cut down on the paper work. If you just have a BS in Engineering, then you will have to deal with BS in Engineering.
Real Law is not like TV, so I don’t think you can avoid the paperwork. Also, you have to have good people skills, which sometimes means NOT proving someone wrong, even if they are wrong.
Decide what your ideal job would be in 20 years, then write a list of smaller steps/goals to reach that. Every year, check your progress. If you don’t do this, you are more likely to flounder around and won’t be as successful (although financially you should be fine either way).
On last thing: I don’t think the world needs another lawyer…
Well if you don’t like tons of paper work, neither job is good.
You sound like you want to be a Lawyer.
tell me interst frist
why dont you look into patent law? get a background in science then do a law conversion course or whatever then you use your engineering wrt law? (though technically it could be a bit boring lol) but you’d use your brain and get to fight lol
i’d say talk to some people at your college in those departments and ask about the jobs that result from those majors. you should learn as much as you can about them and make a decision between the two. choose which one you like the best because you’ll have to live with it!
Let me look into my crystal ball …
Engineer will lead to a rewarding happy career .. you will be poor but contented working 60 hours a week for a major international company .. you will marry a dumpy woman have 2 kids and stick together for life. You will live in a 3 bed house and drive a Ford.
Lawyer will make you cynical and hard hearted, working 20 hrs a week for a specialist legal firm in a major city .. you will become excessively rich and marry a beauty queen, get divorced and marry a model .. you will live in a 10 room mansion with swimming pool and tennis court and have a holiday home in Europe. You will drive a BMW …
Conclusion = if you want to be happy, become an Engineer .. if you want to be Rich, become a Lawyer ..
I’m a chemical engineer myself. I don’t agree that engineering does not need passion. I think you can be passionate about any job, if you sincerely like it. As for law, exactly what’s so passionate about fighting for some arbitrary company’s legal hassle for years and doing background research for months altogether? I’d say forget about passion and monotony. just decide what you want to do throughout your life. In that field you can pick and choose your job and decide if you want to keep it or move on. Thats always your choice.
